Before, during and after your massage treatment

Massage is an integrative therapy, and there are certain things that you can do before, during and after a treatment that can enhance all of the benefits.
It is up to the therapist to create an effective massage session, but the client can make it even better.

As the therapist, I have been trained to know what to do during your massage session. And as a person who understands every human is very different- I blend that with my own intuition to tailor the details to your unique needs.

As the client, what can you do before, during and after your massage to enhance all of the benefits?


- Drink plenty of water the day and morning before your treatment (and avoid alcohol)

- Deep breaths: practice getting your body into rest and digest mode before the massage, so that by the time you lay down in the table, it will be a lot easier to relax and receive 

- Wear loose, comfortable clothing

- Arrive early to your appointment, this will help to keep your nervous system calm and give you maximum time on the table 

- Avoid coffee (if possible) within 6 hours of your treatment

- Don't make too many plans surrounding your treatment, the effects won't last as long if you're rushing off to your next commitment (however, massage is always better than no massage at all- this is just a tip to get more out of the treatment) 


- Communicate with your therapist, be clear about your expectations and preferences 

- Breathe deeply and focus your attention on the breath. When your mind wanders- thats ok! Just bring your attention back to the breath when you realise (and it's ok that this might happen every few minutes, with practice it will get easier). If a certain thought keeps persisting, let it be- detach from it and just view it like a cloud in the sky.

- The therapist should be doing everything they can to make you feel safe and to relax your mind and body in order to access the deeper muscles, however, you can help with this by, again, focusing on breathing and by consciously letting your body go...aim to feel 'heavy' on the table 

- If the pressure isn't right, communicate. If something doesn't feel right, communicate. If you start getting a headache, feeling thirsty, feeling sick- communicate. We can read your body/energy to an extent but cannot read your mind. The best results are achieved when the client and therapist work together. Don't feel bad in voicing what you want! The therapist will (or should) be thankful for the guidance, your comfort and satisfaction always is top priority.


- Give yourself a few moments to breathe and reflect after the therapist has left the room. Wiggle your fingers and toes, have a nice big stretch and sit up a few moments before you get up and dressed.

- Don't rush off. Have some water or tea, it is dangerous to drive right after a treatment because your reflexes are slowed. Take 5-10 minutes to reflect on the experience ease back into your body

- Drink plenty of water, then some more. And a bit more. With massage, we are releasing and circulating all sorts of 'stuff' throughout your system- including waste. So drink plenty of water to flush it all out and prevent a headache. We want your body to be like a fresh, flowing stream not a sluggish, stagnant pond. 

- Rest. I know this isn't always possible, but if it is- rest. At least for a few hours. After a massage treatment your body is in rest and digest healing mode. It is in this state that the body will repair and replenish itself- so the more time you allow for it to do this, the better

- Avoid alcohol, excess sugar and processed foods for the rest of the day/night

More and more scientific studies are emerging, exploring and confirming the benefits of therapeutic touch.
This amazing therapy can offer so much more than just relaxation and muscle pain relief...the benefits really are endless and if you can practice being present throughout the treatment, you are creating an ideal environment for your body to heal itself and function optimally.
